District of the People's Democratic Republic
of Yemen, which was formerly ruled by Arab
chiefs in protective relations with Britain.
A remote plateau region at 1,400 m/4,500 ft,
it was for a long time unknown to westerners
and later attracted such travellers as Harry
St John Philby and Freya Stark. Cereals,
tobacco, and dates are grown by settled
farmers, and there are nomadic Bedouin. The
chief town is Mukalla.
